Nose reshaping (Rhinoplasty)

If you have nasal deformity or are unhappy with your nose shape, it con be corrected by surgery. The operation done for this purpose is known as RHINOPLASTY.

How these nasal deformities are produced? Some people are born with these (congenital), others develop due to trauma incurred in childhood falls. Some suffer trauma in accidents, supports or assaults, when nasal bones get broken and these heal in abnormal shape. Sometimes due to infection or inappropriate septal surgery nasal bridge sinks down producing saddle nose. One should always have nasal operation by experienced surgeon to avoid such catastrophe.

There are various types of nasal deformities, such as

• Crooked nose

• Nasal hump

• Nasal saddling

• Bulbous tip

• Drooping tip

• Skeletal Irregularities

• Wide alar base

Rhinoplasty

This is the operation done to change the existing nasal shape. Some times nasal septum is also corrected with this procedure, the operation is then called septorhinoplasty.

Nose is partly bony and partly cartilaginous. This skeleton is covered by skin. In rhinoplasty skin is lifted off this skeleton ,bone and cartilage are sculptured according to need and skin is placed back in position. The whole procedure is done in such a way that it does not lead to any cuts or marks on the face.

On your first visit you will be examined thoroughly. Your nasal deformities will be assessed carefully and discussed with you. Photographs will be taken and discussed with you. Blood will be taken for various tests.

On 2 nd visit blood tests will be assessed. Your nasal deformities will be discussed again with you and you will be given a chance to ask any queries about the operation and you will be listed for the surgery.

The operation is done under general anesthesia which is given by trained anesthetist. It usually takes about 3 hours to complete the procedure. When you wake up from surgery , you may have a dressing in nose due to which you will have to breath trough your mouth overnight as the dressing is removed next morning. You will also have a special dressing on dorsal surface of nose to hold the bones in place. You will develop some degree of black eyes which usually settles in 2 weeks time. You will be up and above on the next day of surgery and can do light activity. You will be required to avoid heavy exertion for 2 weeks.

The final results of operation become obvious in 6 weeks time however nasal shape keeps on improving up to 6 months.
